History of The Program

In 2001, Ron Mays was the first person to provide private and semi-private goaltending instruction using the shooting and goaltending pads at the River Oaks Rec Center in Oakville.

The program commenced with Ron Mays providing instruction to three goaltenders. Today, close to 250 goalies of all ages and ability from across Southern Ontario receive instruction from Ron Mays, many on a weekly basis.

The success of the Ron Mays Goaltending School is directly related to the success of its students. Since its inception, over 50 students who train with Ron have progressed from the House League system to the Rep system. Several other goalies that were already playing rep hockey have advanced in the rep system moving from A to AA or AA to AAA. Many students who are playing at the House League level are leading their leagues in goals against average while leading their teams to championships.

At the OHL level, each of the Niagara Ice Dogs’ goalies under Ron’s direction the past two seasons have posted career highs in save percentage and goals against average. During the 2004-2005 season, Michael Ouzas , a career back-up goalie who had played just 27 games in two seasons prior to an early season trade to the Ice Dogs, emerged as the team’s starting goaltender. Ouzas posted 2.18 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and four shutouts this season. For his efforts, Ouzas was named the Ontario Hockey League’s Goaltender of the Year as well as participating in the OHL all-star game in February. During the 2003-2004 season, Ice Dogs starting goaltender David Shantz was named to the NHL/CHL Top Prospects Game, the OHL all-star game, and was awarded the team’s Rookie of the Year while leading the Ice Dogs to the OHL final. Shantz was also invited to attend Canada’s National Junior Team Summer Evaluation Camp. Finally, Shantz was selected in the second round, 37th overall, by the Florida Panthers at the 2004 NHL entry draft, making him the highest drafted Ontario born goaltender.

During the 2007 OHL draft, 4 long-time students of the Ron Mays Goaltending School (Brandon Maxwell – Erie, Bryce O’Hagan – Sault Ste. Marie, Brendan Gorecki – Niagara, and Joe Lepera – Saginaw) were selected by OHL teams.
