We will be accepting a maximum of 24 students per week with 3 to 1 goalie to instructor ratio. Each student will be assigned to a group of 3 goalies of similar age and ability to ensure each student is both comfortable and challenged to take their game to the highest level possible.
Head Instructor
Ron Mays has been providing cutting
edge instruction to goaltenders of all ages and ability since
2001. The former goaltending coach of the Niagara Ice Dogs
(formerly Mississauga Ice Dogs) of the Ontario Hockey League for
six seasons, Ron’s contribution helped six former Ice Dogs
goaltenders move on to pro hockey (David Shantz, Doug
Groenestege, Miguel Beaudry, Michael Ouzas, Kyle Knechtel,
Sebastian Dahm) after their junior careers were completed.
At the conclusion of the 2007/2008
OHL season, Ron left the organization to form Pro Goal Athlete
Management (www.progoalam.com), in conjunction with former Ice Dogs
scout Rick Brasil. Pro Goal is an athlete management company that
specializes in the representation of hockey goaltenders.
Ron Mays’ coaching credentials are
second to none. An Advanced II certified coach in Canada’s National
Coaching Certification Program, Ron also possesses a Masters Degree
in Sport Psychology, making him one of only a few goaltending
coaches in the world to earn this distinction. Ron is not only an
expert in the physical, technical and tactical components of the
goaltending position, his sport psychology background allows him to
help goaltenders develop the extremely important and yet often
neglected, psychological component of the goaltending position.
Ron is also the author of four
best-selling books on goaltending and the producer of a three volume
DVD series entitled Between the Pipes: The Ultimate Instructional
Resource for Goaltenders which was released in October, 2003.
Several long-time students of the Ron
Mays Goaltending School have made the jump from minor hockey to
junior hockey, with a number having represented their country during
international competition. Some of these students include Bryce
O’Hagan, Adrian Volpe, Andrew Loverock, Brandon Maxwell, Lucas
Lobsinger, Nicole Paniccia, Joey Lepera and Brendan Gorecki.
Bryce O’Hagan, a Burlington resident
who has trained with Ron for over 8 years, helped Canada’s Under 18
team capture the prestigious Ivan Hlinka Cup during the summer of
2008, a tournament which featured the best 1991 born hockey players
in the world. Prior to this, Bryce led Team Ontario to a Gold Medal
at the 2008 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge where he was named MVP
after shutting out the United States 3-0 in the final.
